Colonoscopy Complications

COMPLICATIONS FROM COLONOSCOPY / POLYPECTOMY

Although complications from Colonoscopy and Polypectomy are highly uncommon, they can occur. Bleeding at the site of a Polypectomy or biopsy can occur, but should be minimal.  Perforation and death are extremely rare occurrences.  Most typically, you may have a vein irritation at the injection site or a mild reaction to the sedative provided.  Patients suffering from heart or lung disease may also acquire complications due to their illness. However, it is important to recognize the early signs of possible complications should they come about.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Fever and chills
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Swelling
